Unbearable craving: Black bear trashes Alaska pizza employee’s car after sniffing food

JUNEAU, Alaska — People are not the only ones craving a late-night snack.

A black bear destroyed the car of an Alaska man who works for a pizza place in Juneau. The animal was attracted by the smell of pizza, and while there was no food in the car, the aroma proved to be irresistible.

Andrew Fairchild, who works for Juneau Pizza, said he was awakened at 3 a.m. Friday when he heard his neighbors, the Juneau Empire reported. The bear was inside Fairchild’s car and was honking the horn, the newspaper reported.

“I think it was the delicious smell of the pizza that drove the bear to the point where he could not resist the urge to go into the car,” Fairchild said in a telephone interview. “It’s pretty totaled on the inside. The seat belt was ripped completely out. The panel where the stereo is (is) ripped off.”

The bear destroyed the interior of the car. When it was set free, it scampered into the woods but then doubled back for another attempt to find the pizzas.

“It opened the door to my daughter’s minivan,” Fairchild told the Empire. “It opened the door, but it did no damage.”

Fairchild said insurance companies in Alaska have dealt with bears damaging automobiles, so his vehicle was quickly sent in for repairs.

“Luckily we have local insurance and they completely understand what’s going (on),” Fairchild told the Empire.

“No playing favorites,” Juneau Pizza posted on its Facebook page. “The bear wants a pizza, he has to call it in just like everyone else.”
