Michigan boys rewarded for returning wallet with $364

WAYLAND, Mich. — Two Michigan boys were rewarded and hailed as heroes after turning over a wallet filled with $364 to police, who delivered it to its rightful owner.

The boys, Austin Nichols, 13, and Logan Mishoe, 14, approached a couple of Wayland police officers who were talking to each other behind department headquarters with the wallet, MLive reported.

The teens found the wallet while seeking cover from the sun under some trees at a park.

“I sat down and I almost sat on it,” Mishoe told WXMI. “And Austin was like, ‘Oh Logan look.’ And I was like, ‘what?’ And I looked down and there’s a wallet.”

The wallet belonged to Jason Burchardt, of Hopkins, WXMI reported. He lost it in the park after eating lunch with a friend recently. Officers later delivered it to him.

Burchardt gave the boys $50 each as a reward.

“It’s not the norm. Many people today would just take the money and run with it,” Burchardt said. “It’s super easy to do the right thing when someone is standing there and sees you do it. It’s a whole other level of integrity when no one knows what you’ve found and what you have, and you still do the right thing.”

The boys were also named Citizens of the Day by the Wayland chief of police.

“These are all our kids and when they do the right thing like that I’m about as happy as the parent,” Chief Mark Garnsey said. “It’s a tough spot right now for all of us and to be able to share this with the community – I’m proud that our citizens acted this way.”
