The Space Force debuted its official song on Tuesday during the 2022 Air Force Associated, Air, Space and Cyber Conference being held in Maryland.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Jay Raymond introduced the song in a video saying, “We wanted a song that spoke to our guardians, that brought to life our motto, ‘Semper Supra,’” Air Force Times reported.

“Semper Supra” is Latin for “Always Above.”

The song was written by two former service members who undertook years of research and made several revisions before it was ready to be released, Space Force officials said in a news release.

The song’s foundation was then sent to various military bands to help create the musical arrangement. It was narrowed down from 12 submissions.

That’s where Sean Nelson, U.S. Coast Guard Band trombonist and staff arranger came in. He added more than 30 instrument parts to the arrangement and had the USCG band perform the song. Eventually, with the help of the Coast Guard, the Space Force had its song.

Read the lyrics:

We’re the mighty watchful eye,

Guardians beyond the blue,

The invisible front line,

Warfighters brave and true.

Boldly reaching into space,

There’s no limit to our sky.

Standing guard both night and day,

We’re the Space Force from on high.

The process to pen the song started about the same time the Space Force was created in 2019.
