Sheriff, FBI Jacksonville monitor for local threats of violence before Inauguration

Jacksonville, FL. — The FBI Jacksonville field office and Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office addressed the violence in Washington D.C. on January 6. Sheriff Mike Williams said the response by law enforcement had many “failures” and he reassured residents that they wouldn’t see anything similar in Jacksonville.

Special agent in charge of the FBI’s Jacksonville field office, Rachel Rojas, and Jacksonville Sheriff Williams spoke out against the violence after the FBI warned of threats to all 50 state capitols.

Action News Jax’s Robert Grant asked the Sheriff if there were any credible threats in Jacksonville “No not that we see. We have a lot of information coming in.”

Special Agent Rojas said they are addressing tips coming in locally. “We are addressing as much information coming in either through tips, or other intelligence we have internally within our agency and through other agencies. Our partnerships have been really key. So we are sharing information amongst each other.”

Sheriff Williams and Special Agent Rojas said threats of violence would not be tolerated in Jacksonville and if they need to ramp up quickly, they will do so.

However, at the time, both agencies said they are just in a monitoring phase.

Sheriff Williams said many tips come in regarding social media posts, which take more time to find possible merit.

He said if you see something, say something.

Tips can be submitted to the FBI at 1-800-CALLFBI (225-5324) and to the Sheriff’s Office at (904) 630-0500.
