JEA crews head to gulf coast to help recovery efforts

Jacksonville FL — As Sally continues to make its way through Alabama, Florida and Georgia, JEA is sending crews to the gulf coast to help with recovery efforts. The utility says they are sending both electric and water crews. The electric crews are heading to Foley, Alabama, which is near where the storm made landfall, to help the utility company there restore power. We’re told its unclear how long the 29 personnel will be in southern Alabama since that’s determined by the utility company requesting the assistance. JEA says early indications are that there are substantial repairs needed in the area.

This is the second team to head to the gulf coast area, earlier Wednesday JEA’s water and wastewater crews left to go to the Pensacola area to help with any water restoration or wastewater management efforts. JEA says the 30 crewmembers will start restoration efforts Thursday or earlier if it’s safe to start. The water crews are expected to work for up to 14 days.

The pandemic isn’t pausing for hurricanes, so JEA says crews will still practice coronavirus safety measures like wearing masks, social distancing when they can and daily sanitizing of vehicles and equipment.

JEA says they’ve had four total aid requests this hurricane season.
